An error from Scott Dann allowed Jermain Defoe an empty net to hand the Black Cats a much needed three points against Crystal Palace last night.

The ex-England star struck the only goal of the game 10 minutes from time as Sunderland left Selhurt Park victorious for the second successive season. Defoe capitalised on a mistake by Eagles defender Dann to nip-in and easily slot the ball away, recording his seventh goal in all competitions.

However, Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce was left sweating on the former Spurs striker, after he went over on his ankle and limped off the pitch late on.

Crystal Palace had dominated for long spells at home, but they failed to seriously trouble Costel Pantilimon and a resolute traveling defence.

Palace continue to struggle at home

The Eagles have made a storming start to the season thus far, but just two of their six wins have come at Selhurst Park.

The tactical setup that Alan Padrew has for his players has predominately favoured a counter-attacking system, which has often seen Palace play better and trouble more sides when the responsibilities of a hosting team are not present.

The onus is on Pardew’s side to make most of the running on their own turf, but they struggled to break down a defiant opposition, as Sunderland implemented the same system that allows Crystal Palace to pick up away victories.
