Tottenham Hotspur got back to winning ways, downing Southampton 2-0 at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Spurs put the pain of the loss to Newcastle behind them, with 22- year-old Dele Alli scoring against the run of play at the end of the first half after Southampton had started strongly but to no avail. Spurs managed to push Manchester United out of the top four on goal difference after United lost 2-1 against Norwich City.

Kane broke the deadlock in the 40th minute in his 100th Tottenham appearance, scoring after a solo effort that saw off three players and a one-on-one with Saints keeper Paulo Gazzaniga. Alli scored only three minutes later to put Spurs 2-0 up.

Sadio Mane had the earliest chance for Saints but an outstanding save from Spurs gloveman Hugo Lloris kept the game level.

In the second half, neither side really settled into a rhythm and Saints were desperate to try and pull it back, but the home side had not come back from a losing position to win in 16 months under Ronald Koeman.

Both teams enjoyed spells in possession in the second half, but nothing notable developed. Erik Lamela had a free kick opportunity 22 yards out, but it was deflected behind for a corner which eventually resulted in a goal kick for Saints.

Tottenham hearts were in mouths for a moment as an attempted challenge by Kane on Victor Wanyama resulted in the former coming off second-best. No risks were taken with the star striker who, admittedly, did not look distressed when leaving the field.

Lloris produced an outstanding save at his left post in the match’s dying embers, getting down quickly to keep a clean sheet for the visitors.
