West Ham United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Edimilson Fernandes on a four-year deal.

Fernandes joins the Hammers from hometown club FC Sion, where he made 66 first-team appearances and featured heavily in the Europa League last season.

The 20-year-old was unveiled before the second leg of their Europa League qualifier against Astra Giurgiu, where they eventually fell 2-1 on aggregate.

“I am really happy to be here at West Ham United, it is a new challenge for me and now it is down to me to work hard to become a top player,” he told whufc.com.

“I am a player capable of getting the game going and adding excitement to the action on the pitch. I spoke to the manager [Slaven Bilic] and the conversation was very positive and I appreciate this opportunity.”

“I had never been to this stadium before, but it is a really magnificent stadium and I will be working to my best to get to the top. It is a large stadium, I have also played at Anfield here in England, but this stadium is really impressive.”

Fernandes made his first-team debut for fellow Swiss side FC Zurich in June 2013, aged just 17.

Last season, the midfielder put together his best season yet, making a total of 39 appearances across all competitions.

He will be ready to hit the ground running having started in all five of FC Sion’s games in the Swiss Premier League this season.
