Central Coast Mariners manager Tony Walmsley spoke with great optimism in the wake of his side’s 3-1 defeat to the Melbourne Victory, intent on making the most of a long off-season.

Despite the disappointing result, Walmsley was full of praise for his side but admitted there was plenty of scope for improvement.

“[Melbourne] Victory played with a lot more composure and class. [They] bossed the game for long periods and it’s a fantastic achievement,” he said.

“It was a privilege for our lads to be a part of that tonight.

Walmsley, who has now been confirmed as the Mariners boss for next season, was full of praise for retiring club legend John Hutchinson and credited his selfless nature.

“It’s time to replace him at the end of the day, he’s looking forward to his next chapter,” he said.

“He’s done that [to recognise when time is up] and I’m looking forward to working with him going forward.”

Despite the challenges that lie ahead for the Mariners, Walmsley was forthcoming about the club’s clear vision for the future and the type of football the club wants to be known for.

“We’ve got some challenges. There’s growth in the squad we’ve got. Lots of room for improvement.”

“There is a very clear mandate and mantra circulating within the club with an entertainment focus and focus on youth.

“[We have] got a new nucleus of players than can play an attractive style of football.”
