The second meeting for these European giants in this season’s edition of the Champions League provided a much better spectacle than the drab first encounter two weeks ago.

Paris Saint-Germain were perhaps the better side, but that was not reflected in the scoreline as Real Madrid proved clinical when it matters most and ensured themselves qualification into the next stage already.

Angel Di Maria, who was again desperate to impress against his old club sparkled at times, hitting the crossbar in the 90th minute. For Madrid, Toni Kroos ran the show and displayed why he should now be considered among the world’s best central-midfielders.

PSG not clinical enough when it matters

With an array of attacking talent at their disposal that includes Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria, Lucas and Ezequiel Lavezzi, you would think that Laurent Blanc’s team would sweep through opposition with unequaled firepower, but PSG have yet to figure out what has to be done in the truly big games. Tight margins decide games against elite teams, pivotal moments become extra precious, every touch, every pass and every shot becomes that little bit more important.

While PSG had plenty of possession and plenty of efforts on goal, they lacked the cutting edge and ability to grind out the win that Europe’s big teams have. On these stages, big teams add that little extra to be able to get a win and right now PSG simply do not have that mentality. No doubt it will come, but it could be a disappointing Champions League campaign if it does not come soon.
