Outside90’s Matt Riggs takes a look at the most popular footballing trends across the globe for this edition of our top 10 social bites countdown.

Possibly not quite a global highlight, but a great Australian prospect in Tom Rogic made his first Scottish Premier League start for Celtic after a long injury lay-off over the weekend. Rogic managed to show his talents and was able to find the back of the net with a fantastic instinctive finish off the outside of his right-foot, which helped Celtic to a 2-0 win.

The French Ligue 1 returned to action on the weekend and Marseille, who usually find themselves towards the top end of the table, suffered an opening day defeat. The reason this scrapes into the top 10 is that their manager surprisingly resigned shortly after the game. This then lead to the resurfacing of a popular Vine of the manager accidentally sitting on a cup of hot tea with the headline ‘Marcelo Bielsa highlights as Marseille Boss’.

It is hard for Cristiano Ronaldo to stay out of the headlines. Earlier in the week the international superstar was disguised as an older man and challenged people on the streets of Madrid to a bit of football. Little did they know they were coming up against one of the World’s greatest ever players.

With the transfer window slowly coming to a close, fans continue to speculate over possible deals to be made. The highlight of football business for this week has to go to Raul Jimenez, as the player reportedly overslept and missed his medical at West Ham, which forced the London club to pull out of the loan deal. He now looks to be on his way to Benfica.

Raheem Sterling made his Premier League debut for Manchester City on Monday night and was gifted with an absolute peach of an opportunity to score. The £49 million man failed to find the back of the net and Liverpool fans jumped at the chance to tell him what they really thought. Sterling also made headlines this week after he crashed his car. His week is just going from bad to worse.

Petr Cech had a debut to forget of his own, as Arsenal stumbled to a 2-0 home defeat to West Ham. In response, Cech took to Twitter and looked to quickly move onto the next game. This statement trended highly and he received a mixed bag of responses, some in support and others asking Wenger to find the receipt and return the gloveman. There was a lot to pick from in the Arsenal section, such as the classic ‘#WengerOut’, but being such a high profile transfer and deemed as the missing piece of the puzzle for The Gunners this Tweet stumbles in at number five.

A great piece of sportsmanship by Doncaster Rovers makes it in at number four. Doncaster’s Harry Forrester gave his side the lead, albeit accidentally. A ‘pass’ back to the opposition goalkeeper after the ball was kicked-out to allow one of the Rover’s players to receive treatment sailed straight over his head and into the back of the net. The Doncaster manager then without hesitation told his team to allow the opposition Bury striker to walk the ball into the goal so that they were back on level terms.

Moving away from Europe and across the North Atlantic Ocean to the MLS, Frank Lampard started his first game for new side New York City. The derby match against New York Red Bulls proved to be one to forget for Lampard and co. as they fell to a 2-0 defeat. The reason for the popularity of this clip though, is that the former Chelsea great was nutmegged in the lead up to Red Bulls second goal which ended up putting the game out of reach.

Coming in at number two is the comedy stylings of Tottenham Hotspur. Lilywhites fans out there were not impressed as the official Twitter account quickly corrected themselves after claiming that Kyle Walker had scored to give them the lead against Manchester United. Not only did they have to suffer an opening day defeat, but they were quickly reminded that any mistake in the Premier League World will be punished, and quickly.

The return of the Premier League had every football fan excited, so number one on this list picks itself really, as Coutinho scores a wonder goal to give a new look Liverpool side a late 1-0 win over Stoke at the Britannia. Honourable mentions also have to go to Ross Barkley and Yaya Toure, as they managed to find the back of the net with style for their respective sides. Welcome back to the EPL!
