The 2016 FFA Cup provides it’s first A-League showdown tomorrow night as Western Sydney takes on the Wellington Phoenix.

Appearing before the media ahead of tomorrow night’s Round of 32 clash, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic claimed that his players had quickly rediscovered the spark which led them through to last season’s grand final.

“At this stage we are happy where we are at,” said Popovic.

“Will we be better in a month? Yes, will we be better in two months? Yes of course, but we are good enough to be more than competitive tomorrow night.”

The Wanderers no doubt have a tougher start to their tournament campaign, but Popovic believes his side and Wellington will provide an insightful contrast at this early stage of the season.

“We’ve had both sides of it in the FFA Cup – in the first year we lost to Adelaide away, last year we beat Brisbane in the first round and an NPL side in the second round,”

“They are all tough games, but I guess Wellington are a bit like us – they’ve brought in some new players and I think are just coming back from a trip.

“Them and us will be looking to see how we are progressing…but it’s good to have the A-Legue side first up and I’m sure the players are looking forward to it.”

Having already made six signings in the offseason Popovic also mentioned that he wants to further strengthen his team, hinting that the Wanderers are still on the lookout for another attacker in particular.

“There’s more to come…we’ve still got three places available,” said the coach.

“If we believe that there are players out there that can make us better, make the squad better, then they will come in.”

“You’re always searching for players to make a difference…if we can find one in that attacking-third that makes a difference, whether that is scoring or creating, that is something we want to try and bring to the club.”
