Three Key Talking Points – Melbourne Victory vs Brisbane Roar

A Premiership deciding match gets underway on Saturday night, with reigning champions Melbourne Victory standing in-between Brisbane Roar and another piece of silverware for their ever growing trophy cabinet.

Brisbane’s away form

Last weekend the Roar proved just how good they are at Suncorp Stadium, coming from behind to down Newcastle in style. However, they will be hoping that luck can travel too, having lost all of their last three matches outside of Queensland. Making matters a little more difficult for John Aloisi’s troops is how strong Victory are at home, having not lost to Brisbane on their turf since January 2014 – including a 4-0 win back in round 15, while throughout the past two season’s the men in navy blue have only conceded more than one goal just once.

Will the Roar claim the Premiership?

After Melbourne City’s loss to Perth Glory last weekend, Brisbane enter Saturday night’s clash in the lead for the Premiership. Sitting two points behind of Adelaide United, three points ahead of Melbourne City (both of whom have already played), and two points in front of Western Sydney who play on Sunday, a Roar victory will seal the Premiership. However, should the visitors stumble and pick up a point, or less, their dreams of silverware will be over.

Melbourne’s disappointing regular season

Despite sealing a finals spot with their thrashing of Wellington last weekend, Melbourne’s season has been on the whole, disappointing. After winning the double in convincing fashion last year, Kevin Muscat’s side strengthened their squad, positioning themselves as a favourite amongst the punters. However, the side’s depth in the midfield and defence certainly came under strain (and not due to any particular correlation with their Champions League campaign), seeing a huge form slump in the middle of the season. And while upfront things have been better, there are still some questions over the lack of fluency in the final-third given their attacking personnel. Overall things have improved across the past few weeks, but there are still serious questions over the team’s performances and internal issues at camp Victory.
