Michael Bridges’ and Teddy Sheringham’s hopes of a coaching partnership are set to be dashed, with reports the Tottenham legend will miss out on the top job at the Newcastle Jets.

Goal indicates that the club’s CEO Lawrie McKinna is set to look in another direction, having not been satisfied with the pair’s bid for a co-management venture.

Speaking on Box2Box radio over the weekend, McKinna admitted that he was “leaning towards a local coach.”

“I’ve always been an advocate for Australian coaches because if you’re bringing someone in from overseas, they have to be better than what you’ve got here… if the local boys are good enough, they deserve to get a chance,” he added.

It is now looking increasingly likely Adelaide W-League and youth coach Mark Jones is set to be handed the reigns, taking over from Scott Miller who departed last week.

Clayton Zane, the Jets’ youth team coach, is currently overlooking senior training and appears likely to step into the vacant assistant coaching role left vacant by Luciano Trani.

The pair both have senior experience at the Jets, with Jones holding an assistant coaching position from 2006-2010, while Zane stepped into the role of caretaker coach during the 2013-14 season.

Meanwhile for Bridges, he is still expected to be offered an assistant coaches position by the club.
