It was an arduous task but Bayern managed to overcome Schalke with a spirited performance and a bit of luck.

Schalke used their home advantage to ensure their opponents were never at ease, with their physical approach complimenting the good periods of possession they enjoyed. The Royal Blues mounted a number of attacks on Bayern’s goal but to no avail as the Bavarians managed to hold out defensively. Two late goals from Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich broke Schalke’s hearts as the Bayern juggernaut rolled on.

Renato Sanches made his first start with an indifferent performance and Bayern youngster Joshua Kimmich’s fine substitute performance could see him in the starting lineup sooner rather than later.

Schalke unlucky, but still not good enough

Schalke’s performance for most of the match was an excellent response to the 1-0 loss away to Eintracht. This was a fully concentrated effort, however in truth despite spirited efforts to try and engineer a breakthrough, they simply could not find a cutting edge in the final third. The shoots of promise in midfield need to be fully supported by those in the advanced attacking roles if they are to create more clear-cut chances.

Lewandowski saves Bayern

The hat-trick hero of Matchday one started the game against Schalke slowly. The Polish striker barely threatened and for the most part was lethargic with his touches and general play. However, to coin a generic phrase, form is temporary and class is permanent. This was certainly the case for Lewandowski who broke away from the Schalke defence to score the opening goal.

Slow start for Renato Sanches and the Bayern squad

Sanches showed plenty of nerves on his first start for Bayern. The 19-year-old, who recently won Euro 2016 with Portugal, seem overawed by the occasion. Carlo Ancelotti will not be fazed by a slow start to his Bayern career, however holding down a spot for the German powerhouse is never an easy feat. Moreover, when you consider the introduction of Douglas Costa and Kimmich proved decisive game changers, then players like Sanches must adapt quickly or face becoming merely a squad player.
