Current Sydney FC and former Wellington Phoenix Tony Pignata believes Wellington Phoenix will be handed a 10-year deal by the FFA after recent speculation of a potential deal being close between the parties.

Talk was rife yesterday that the Phoenix were closing in on a deal after reports on Twitter from 3 News reporter Simon Hampton, that “a number of Phoenix players will renew contracts when license is announced – which is expected shortly”.

CEO of the Phoenix from the club’s inception in 2007 until 2010, Pignata said he was confident that the club would receive the deal they have been seeking.

“I reckon they will get a 10-year deal to be honest,” he told the Daily Football Show.

“I’d be pushing for that because there are not many takers for the Newcastle Jets at the moment and we need to keep the league at 10 teams.”

“A South Sydney team? We’ve been very public that it’s wrong. It’s where our big market is at the moment.”

“FFA are doing it [pushing for South Sydney] for TV views, but it’s going to detract from us.”

“We’re not going to stand there and let all the work go to waste. We want to make clear that what they’re thinking of doing won’t work just for the sake of getting some extra TV numbers.”

Pignata also confirmed that this weekend’s Sydney Derby is expected to sell-out and that he and Graham Arnold would be sitting down to discuss the possibility of ACL player signings this week.
