Garry Monk sacked from Swansea City – Who will replace him?

After a horrific run of results from September onward, Swansea City have sacked Garry Monk and are in search of a new manager.

Monk’s asisstant Pep Clotet, along with coaches James Beattie and Kristian O’Leary have also left the club and the Wales-based outfit will be looking for new coaching staff in the upcoming days. The outgoing Englishman was sacked after winning only one match in the previous 11 and overseeing a slip from a ‘top four’ chase to being only one point above the relegation zone.

Chairman Huw Jenkins decided it was time for a change and Monk paid the price for poor results, leaving the club after 12 years. The now 36-year-old was a Swansea player from 2004, the team’s captain over all of the four tiers of English football and was appointed interim-manager in February 2014, when Michael Laudrup was sacked. The question about Monk’s successor is still very vibrant and the sources from the British media have been mentioning a few possible solutions.

Brendan Rodgers, former Swansea and Liverpool manager, who managed to bring Jacks into the Premier League five years ago, has been ruled out as a possible replacement. He is set to sign a two-year lucrative £8m contract with a club from the Middle East, according to reports in the Telegraph. Great results in his first spell in Wales would have been a solid recommendation, but only 24 hours since Monk was sacked, he is ruled out of contention to take over the Swans.

David Moyes was mentioned in the British media but he seems as an unlikely option, while the Guardian have been mentioning Dennis Bergkamp as a possible successor of Monk’s. He is assistant manager at Ajax and Huw Jenkins was reported to be looking at the ‘non-flying’ Dutchman into the consideration for the job. Names such as Jorge Sampaoli, the Chile coach who won Copa America last summer, Gus Poyet, now AEK Athens manager and Mark Warburton from Rangers have also been thrown around. Yet, it remains unanswered, will anyone from the above mentioned coaches be ready to leave the current job and jump into the Swansea chair?

Whoever becomes new the Swansea manager, it definitely will be entering an interesting job. The club has been steadily progressing for the last decade and each of the last five managers did great things. Monk was able to break the club’s record in terms of the Premier League points won in during a season, finishing last term in eighth place.

Huw Jenkins is known for making good choices. We will see if he can do it once again, but the new energy is much needed in the squad. The Swans look disoriented and a new face in the dressing room must make an immediate impact, if the team is to get out of the relegation battle swiftly.
