Sunderland have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Michael Simoes Domingues, also known as ‘Mika’, on a two-year deal from Portuguese side Boavista.

Twenty-five-year-old Mika’s arrival caps off a busy transfer window for David Moyes’ new club with the shot-stopper becoming the club’s 10th signing.

“The deal has been ratified by FIFA, after Sunderland completed all of the necessary protocols in advance of the transfer window closing,” a statement read on safc.com.

“A technical issue meant that Boavista were unable to complete their requirements by the 11pm deadline on August 31, however FIFA are satisfied that both teams fulfilled their commitments and the transfer has now been approved.”

Mika is set to compete with Jordan Pickford for the club’s No.1 starting position. Vito Mannone is sidelined with an elbow injury and will see him out of action until November.

The goalkeeper possesses previous international experience having featured for Portugal at under-20 and 21 level in previous years.

Domingues’ move to Wearside will be his first venture outside of his native homeland, having played all his football in Portugal’s top two divisions including with Benfica.
