After a relatively quiet couple of weeks, Inter Milan appear to be resuming their business in the transfer market, with the loan signing of Montenegrin forward Stevan Jovetic from Manchester City reportedly imminent.

Inventive, powerful, and deadly with both feet, Roberto Mancini may be gaining another quality piece to add to the jigsaw being assembled at Inter.

With additions needed both up front and out wide due to a lack of depth in those areas, the Nerazzurri are on the verge of fulfilling their promise to bring in new additions to the aforementioned positions.

What they are getting with their impending new arrival, as well as depth, is simple enough to describe in one word – quality.

The Montenegrin undoubtedly has the talent and skill set to be a major success once more in Serie A, following his spell with Fiorentina, and his arrival at the club is being greeted in positive fashion by fans and media alike. The signing of the Partizan Belgrade youth product ticks many boxes for Mancini and Inter, and a sizeable impact is to inevitably be expected from the striker.

This has all been heard before, however, for those who have followed the Montenegrin’s journey from one of Serie A’s brightest talents to Manchester City flop.

In a time when City were more than well-stocked in the striking department, the club decided on parting with £22 million (€31 million) in order to bring Jovetic to the Etihad.

It did not work out for him.

Ongoing injury issues as well as fierce competition for places up front limited the former Fiorentina man to just 11 league starts over two seasons in the sky blue of City.

As well as this, Jovetic was left out of Manchester City’s 25-man list for the knockout stages of the Champions League last season in order to accommodate then-new-arrival Wilfried Bony. That was the writing on the wall for the striker, and now it looks almost certain the player will return to Italy’s top flight with Inter Milan.

Despite this, the former Viola favourite is being counted upon to help haul Inter back into the Champions League after a disappointing 2014-15. It appears that no one has forgotten his qualities and talents.

Whilst Manuel Pellegrini and Manchester City would be happy to see the player gone and have his wages off the books of the club, it looks like this may be another shrewd piece of business by Inter.

Renowned as one of the most gifted players to emerge from the highly esteemed Partizan Belgrade youth academy that has, apart from Jovetic, nurtured the likes of Lazar Markovic, Adem Ljajic, Stefan Savic, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Matija Nastasic and many more, the striker has a certain level of ability that would allow him to walk into, or at least provide competition for, the starting XI of many big European sides.

Another upside to Jovetic’s game is his versatility. Mainly a striker, the former Partizan man can also operate coming off the left-wing as well as behind the striker.

If Inter’s preseason matches are anything to go by, it appears Mancini will stick with a 4-3-1-2, meaning the forward should start alongside Mauro Icardi. If the formation, however, is changed to a 4-2-3-1 or even a 4-3-3, the Montenegrin can ply his trade as a winger or behind Icardi.

Still only 25, time is on Jovetic’s side, and having already proven his credentials in Serie A, the signing represents, at worst, a calculated risk.

The only issue, it seems, is his own body, with injuries being the main cause of his downfall in Manchester. If the player remains injury free, the impact he could produce would be monumental.

As well as this, financially speaking, the deal represents another transfer coup for the Nerazzurri. The skillful striker will initially arrive on loan in 2015-16, with the loan fee said to be €3 million. It is reported, however, that Inter are legally obliged to complete the transfer of the player with an additional €13 million in June 2016 – much less than the €31 million splurged by Manchester City to acquire the player in 2013.

The signing of the former Fiorentina forward may not be up there with that of Geoffrey Kondogbia, however it is on par with some of the other astute accessions made in the window so far.

Inter are getting a versatile player with an astounding amount of ability for a cut-price fee. It is well worth it, and Jovetic may show Manchester City that they have allowed a star to slip from their grasp.

This signing pushes Inter Milan a step closer to battling for a top three spot in Serie A in 2015-16.
