The future of Socceroo Tommy Oar is still up in the air after the winger’s relationship with Dutch outfit FC Utrecht broke down at the end of the European campaign. His decision not to sign another contract with the club until season’s end contributing to his lack of game time, and ultimately, making his decision to move on an easier one.

The former Brisbane Roar player, now 23, faced a difficult end to his five-year stint at the club in the Netherlands, making just 18 appearances, despite an impressive overall tally of 102 appearances for Utrecht, who finished 2014-15 in 12th place on the Eredivisie ladder.

What is next for Oar? All the Socceroos diehards are hoping for a decent enough move that will gain him valuable match time and fitness, as well as decent competition throughout the next few years. All of which are vital for someone of his age and potential moving forward.

Oar was always highly rated, leaving Brisbane Roar for Europe on a five-year deal and as he has recently stated, that is where he wants to stay.

“I am staying in Europe, 100 per cent, though I am not sure which way it’s going to go in terms of leagues or countries,” Oar said.

This rules out a return down under for the time being, with Oar willing to take on the challenge and remain somewhere in Europe, eyeing the big time with interest in England and Germany.

“It was always my dream to play in England or Germany where it’s really physical and direct. Coming here (Holland) was a development step and in the back of my head I always wanted to play in one of those competitions,” he told goal.com.

Oar played a pivotal role in Australia’s first game of their Russia 2018 qualifiers against Kyrgyzstan, scoring the second goal in a 2-1 win. Although against a much lesser ranked opponent, Oar received praise from manager Ange Postecoglou.

“I thought Tommy Oar, when he came on was really good for us. He was really bright, he went at them … He scored a good goal to so full credit to him,” said the Socceroo boss.

The match sent a message from Oar and if he can continue his impressive form and growth as a player, there are few people that would doubt that his ability could earn him a place in a competition like the Premier League or Bundesliga.

Numerous rumours regarding Oar’s playing future have been floating about, with his agent Michael Jansen confirming that the player has rejected offers worth big money from Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia and the MLS to name a few.

His future in mind, Oar is seeking consistent game time at a club that offers good development and has faith in his ability. A loan spell after six months of arriving at a club is something he does not intend to do.

“A lot of focus is on England at the moment, but also other countries like Germany, Italy and Spain are still open,” said Jansen, who also confirmed a number of Championship sides had been rejected by Oar.

“It’s not about the money, it’s about the development of his career,” Jansen continued, saying Oar would not earn the big money in Europe, but is happy to forfeit the payday for better opportunity to excel.

With any luck, Oar will find himself as part of a decent enough side that will see him playing consistent football in one of Europe’s top leagues, helping him continue his development and progression into one of Australia’s finest exports.

Here is to hoping a deal is completed sooner rather than later and Oar finds himself a consistent starter somewhere, mixed amongst the worlds best players.
