Inter have momentarily moved into fourth place following their narrow victory against 10-man Frosinone.

Inter Milan have defeated relegation threatened Frosinone 1-0 at the Stadio Matusa on Saturday, with club captain Mauro Icardi striking the game’s only goal.

Despite both sides recording efforts on goal, it took until the 74th minute for the deadlock to be broken. 23-year-old Icardi was the man to open the scoring as he latched onto a cross from Ivan Perišic to deftly glance his header across Nicola Leali and into the back of the net.

With the home side coming excruciatingly close to scoring themselves on several occasions, their hopes of gaining anything from the match faded with 10 minutes to go after Leonardo Blanchard was sent off for his second bookable offence of the game.

The victory marks the Nerazzurri’s first away success in the league since January 6 against Empoli. Roberto Stellone’s side, meanwhile, remain just one point from safety at this point in time, with rock-bottom Hellas Verona their next opponent.

Inter must hold onto clinical Icardi

Another match and another goal for the Argentine poacher, as he now has 14 in 28 appearances in Serie A this season.

The La Masia youth product is Inter’s main focal point in attack and almost always gets on the scoresheet when presented with a chance. In fact, Icardi had just one shot throughout the whole duration of the match at the Stadio Matusa, scoring with a well executed header – and not for the first time either that he has done this.

Although many rightly questioned Roberto Mancini’s decision to appoint the youngster as captain of Inter at the beginning of the season, there is no doubting the quality the Nerazzurri’s no.9 possesses as well as how vital he is to his side. With many of Europe’s elite reportedly sounding him out as a potential summer signing, Inter should do everything in their power to hold onto a man who will undoubtedly become one of Europe’s best in the not-too-distant future.

Frosinone prove Serie A credentials despite loss

Even though they did not gain anything from the match, all was not doom and gloom for the home side as they put in a fairly admirable showing against one of the better Serie A teams, albeit one lacking direction.

The Canarini’s form throughout much of the 90 minutes betrayed that of their current league position of 19th on 27 points and they could have come away with at least a point against Inter on another day.

Hitting the woodwork three times in this encounter and forcing Samir Handanovic into a match-saving stop near the end of the game, Frosinone can go into next week’s clash against Hellas with a degree of optimism.

Jovetic makes good on rare first team chance

In for his first league start since the 3-0 loss at the hands of AC Milan at the end of January, the Montenegrin showcased his immense quality in a 90 minutes full of attacking impetus and ingenuity.

Although Icardi was the man who got on the scoresheet for Inter, it was Jovetic who was the chief creator of chances and main attacking threat. He linked up well with teammates, ran at opponents and made space for himself to get shots away.

It remains to be seen, however, whether Mancini still rates the 26-year-old and will decide upon making the loan permanent. The former Fiorentina man, though, has at least displayed his class and proved he can still have an impact this season for Inter.
