Central Coast Mariners striker Roy O’Donovan says the wonder goal he scored against Adelaide United last weekend means little as the Gosford club continues to struggle at the foot of the table, now guaranteed a first ever wooden spoon.

O’Donovan’s stunning volley came about in the the 83rd minute at Hindmarsh Stadium on Sunday, but another Central Coast loss was all but confirmed by that stage. The men in yellow were 4-1 down having opened the scoring, courtesy of their Irish hitman, and was the latest in a string of underwhelming results.

O’Donovan believes the goal was one of his best efforts yet is no more than a consolation in what was Central Coast’s 18th defeat of the season.

“I was just trying to shake off the defender … lost him, found myself with a metre of space and my touch set me up nicely and I just had a shot on my weaker left foot and it flew in the top corner. It’s one of my better ones, definitely,” O’Donovan said.

“It was a good goal, obviously I’m delighted I’ve scored a couple of goals and I’m starting to get my numbers back up again.

“But I’m disappointed we lost. First and foremost, it’s about winning games … when you concede four goals in any game, it’s not good enough, especially when you score two goals away from home, you need to be taking home at least a point.

“It’s frustrating, but the goal is a little consolation.”

With only two games remaining for the season, O’Donovan insists that there is still plenty for the Mariners to play for, particularly putting a smile back on their fans’ faces.

“We’ve got two games to go, I keep saying that we need to finish strong and we need to be more competitive.

“Some of the goals we conceded on the weekend were naive and poor, simple as, and we need to cut it out.

“Fingers crossed we can get a result because our fans deserve that, they’re the most patient people in the world and we need to give them something to cheer about.”

Central Coast close out the season with a Friday night clash at Pirtek Stadium against Western Sydney Wanderers followed by a home F3 Derby against Newcastle Jets on 9 April.
