Robbie Savage: Dimitri Payet must be dropped

Former Welsh international Robbie Savage has said that West Ham manager Slaven Bilic must consider dropping Dimitri Payet in order to help the team reverse the current slump.

The Hammers find themselves sitting in 18th place on the table after a run of four straight defeats, after an insipid performance at home against Southampton, losing 3-0.

Savage, who enjoyed an illustrious career in the Premier League, believes sacrifices need to be made with West Ham having already conceded 16 goals this season inside the opening six matches.

The pundit weighed in on the imbalance seen in the West Ham squad.

“He’s got a decision to make, Bilic. I played in a Birmingham team with Christophe Dugarry and when things are going well you can carry a player like that, but Antonio yes, he’s very good going forward he will score headed goals but I don’t think he sees the danger quick enough going back.” Savage told BBC’s Match of the Day 2 programme.

“Payet is magnificent but doesn’t do much defensively, he’s brought off Lanzini at half-time. I don’t think you can play with two or three of those attacking players when they are losing games.

“He’s got to think, do I leave Payet, he won’t, or Lanzini out. I don’t think you can carry both of them.”

Bilic will be hoping his team can get their name back on the winners list this weekend when they host Middlesbrough.
