Adelaide United’s reported new marquee signing Sergi Guardiola has not had the greatest of records with club signings in recent times.

According to Goal Spain and The Advertiser, the Reds are close to securing the signature of Granada striker Guardiola (no relation to Pep) as their marquee signing for the 2016/17 A-League season.

However, in December last year, the 25-year-old was released by Barcelona just hours after signing him after the club were informed to offensive tweets from the striker’s Twitter account dating back to 2013.

Translated to English, the Tweets read along the lines of ‘suffer Barcelona and the Catalan people’ among other incredibly derogatory Spanish terms.

But speaking to the Spanish radio station Cope, Guardiola said: “I know I made a mistake. I apologise to Catalonia and Barcelona. I understand the decision, I’d do the same.”

“I want to make clear I didn’t write those tweets. A friend took my phone and did it. It’s a misunderstanding. The tweets are from 2013, a joke from a friend, I didn’t even know the tweets existed.

Most recently, Guardiola was on the bench as an unused substitute against Villarreal in a La Liga match last month and has made three appearances for the club’s B team this season.
