Fresh off Rangers’ 5-1 Old Firm Derby thrashing at the hands of fierce rivals Celtic, manager Mark Warburton has apologised to the club’s fans.

The Hoops blew Rangers away, controlling the game in the first half and eventually overwhelming their neighbours to pile on three more goals after half-time.

Twenty-year-old striker Moussa Dembele was the star of the show, netting a sensational hat-trick.

“We just got beaten 5-1, so I’m not going to sit here like an idiot,” Warburton was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

“Apologies to the support because they were magnificent.

“They absolutely have the bragging rights and deserved to win. But there’ s no major gulf (between Rangers and Celtic).

“I don’t see a major gulf. We felt we gave them a bit too much respect at times.

“When we did have those spells – 20 minutes first half, 15 minutes second half – we were fine.

“But good players make good decisions and too many times we made poor decisions in possession.”

Rangers return home to Ibrox to take on Ross County next week, and Warburton has promised supporters that only a win will be acceptable.

“We just have to work harder,” he added.

“When you have adversity, work harder. The fans won’t take that and we won’t take that either.

“At Ibrox next week we won’t accept anything other than a victory. We are much better than we showed today. We have to be.”
