Leicester City missed the chance to go clear on top of the Premier League after Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty in their 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.

Claudio Ranieri’s men took the lead through Shinji Okazaki on 28 minutes and four minutes later had the chance to double that lead when they were awarded a penalty.

Mahrez stepped up, but Aston Villa goalkeeper Mark Bunn dived to his right to save the poorly taken spot-kick and keep his side in the game.

The missed chance came back to haunt Mahrez as Rudy Gestede snatched an equaliser in the 75th minute to deny the Foxes three points and the chance to go top of the Premier League.

It’s not the first time the 24-year-old has failed from the spot as his missed penalty against Bournemouth a fortnight ago cost his side two points in a game that ended 0-0.

Mahrez has been one of Leicester’s most important players this season, but two successive missed penalties have damaged the Foxes’ surprising title challenge.

Ranieri will now have a decision to make on whether the Algerian international should remain as Leicester City’s designated penalty taker.

Mahrez has had an outstanding season and he is one of the reasons Leicester are in this title race, but he cost his side the chance to go top of Premier League and for that, he is Outside 90’s Villain of the Week.
