Outside90’s Benn Mackie casts an eye over the five worst individual performances coming from the English Premier League last weekend.

Sergio Romero (Manchester United vs Swansea)

After Sergio Romero’s performance yesterday, Manchester United’s fans will be thankful that De Gea’s transfer paperwork was somehow lost in the mail. Romero was at fault for at least the first goal, but should have saved both as Manchester United lost 2-1 to Swansea City. In what has been a long drawn out transfer, De Gea looks set to stay on the books at United and will surely be ahead of Romero in the pecking order.

Dejan Lovren (Liverpool vs West Ham)

Just as Dejan Lovren’s Liverpool career looked to be back on track, it was abruptly derailed from a few moments of sheer stupidity. Fans were left shaking their heads as the centre-back had an identity crisis during the first-half, when he thought he was Ronaldo and decided to start beating defenders with step-overs. This was not the worst of it though, as he made a comical defensive error when failing to clear the ball near the sideline, allowing Manuel Lanzini to rob him of possession on the way to setting up West Ham’s second goal. A very poor day out for the Croatian.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (Newcastle United vs Arsenal)

The Serbian International has a reputation of being a firebrand and his performance on the weekend showed why. Aleksandar Mitrovic did not shy away from anything physical and decided to leave his mark on Francis Coquelin with a late challenge, forcing referee Andre Marriner to reach  straight for a red card. Despite being only 20-years-old, he has been sent-off four times in his career already. Newcastle manager Steve McLaren will be hoping Mitrovic can calm his temperament while still showing his enthusiasm for the fight.

Ibrahim Afellay & Charlie Adam (Stoke City vs West Bromwich Albion)

After being brought down from behind in a bad challenge, in a moment of madness, Abrahim Afellay thought he would gain retribution by slapping West Brom’s Craig Gardiner across the face. It was a stupid bit of play from the Dutchman, who earned himself an early shower in the process. Stoke were reduced to nine men just six minutes later after Charlie Adam stomped on Craig Dawson, giving referee Michael Oliver no choice but to present the Scottish International with a straight red card. Stoke City lost the match 1-0 and will now be missing the pair for the next three fixtures.

Theo Walcott (Arsenal vs Newcastle United)

Theo Walcott made his first start of the season in place of Olivier Giroud as Arsenal crawled their way to victory against a determined Newcastle. Despite being a man to the good, Arsenal’s Walcott failed to find open space in a condensed Geordie defence. The Englishman wasted two glorious chances to put his side ahead, one was an absolute sitter from inside six-yards, only managing to put the ball high and wide with an empty net at his mercy. Many pundits have commented on Walcott’s lack of ability to play striker and his display on the weekend only backs up their suspicions.
