Max Reckers, a close friend of Louis van Gaal has claimed that the Dutchman was worried about losing his job to Jose Mourinho long before he was sacked by Manchester United.

Van Gaal was relieved of his Manchester United position after the club claimed the FA Cup. with Mourinho being appointed shortly after.

Reckers has claimed the 65-year-old and his coaching staff left the Red Devils on good terms with their Old Trafford counterparts.

“It’s always the case that those things can happen. You have to be realistic in the football world,” Reckers told the Daily Mail.

“The time before we were that name, so our shadow was over [David Moyes]. It’s all OK, it’s in the past. You have to live with the consequences.’’

With his stint at Old Trafford behind him, Reckers believes van Gaal is finished with his career on the sidelines, despite applying for role as the manager of Belgium.

“Louis has his pension now. Nobody will know what happens. We have a fantastic relationship, but his pension is there. We have been together eight years,” he added.

“Louis is a mature guy of pension age. He has to decide for himself. If he wants to do something he will.

“I don’t think… he has a fantastic house in Portugal and the Netherlands. He worked very hard and deserves it.

“Looking at myself, the innovation side is more me. I find it hard to build new relationships with new coaches. It takes multiple years before you have the process optimised.”
