Melbourne City vs Perth Glory – The fans have their say

An elimination final between two teams who play open and expansive football is the perfect tonic for any A-League on Sunday afternoon.

Melbourne City and Perth Glory come into this clash off the back of miserable defeats, after City were humbled 2-0 at home to Adelaide United while the Glory suffered the embarrassment of a 4-0 loss to Sydney FC.

However, sometimes form goes out in the window in finals and the league’s two most attacking outfits will be determined to atone for last week and take a vital step towards a maiden Championship triumph.

Outside90 sought the thoughts of Matt Mcindoe from Melbourne City Supporters and Brian Doherty from Glory Fans United analyse their teams, pick apart the opposition and the upcoming clash.

  1. How would you sum up City/Glory fans?

Mcindoe: One hit wonders

Doherty: They are mostly plastic green chairs from what I’ve seen on TV.

  1. Which City/Glory player do you rate the most?

Mcindoe: Castro, simply has to be me. A supremely talented import who everyone can enjoy.

Doherty: Before his move to the J-League you couldn’t go past Tando Velaphi – he’s the greatest goal keeper in the world still spewing that Glory let him go. But I’d just have to say someone like Aaron Mooy because he’s consistently delivering week in, week out.

  1. What would you rate the season just concluded out of 10?

Mcindoe: 6/10. Improvement from last season but still no where near the level that this squad should be producing. Don’t get me wrong, there’s been some fine moments and we’ve scored a record 63 goals but the consistency from week to week is lacking.

Doherty: 8/10. Full credit must go to Kenny and Peter  Filopoulos for rebuilding our club after Tony Sage screwed up last year with the salary cap blunder. To come from bottom to where we finished is a top effort.

       4. If you were JVS/Lowe how would you set up for this clash tactically?

Mcindoe: I would be sitting back and luring the Glory centre-backs further forward and utilising Bruno’s pace to get in behind and there has to be a clear directive about stopping Castro’s supply to Glory’s frontmen.

Doherty: I’d go with the 4-4- 2 again because we dominated them last time with this formation. With the El Maestro and Lord Keogh upfront we are unstoppable, so hopefully the defenders do their job so that our hard work in attack pays off.

      5. How disappointing was it to turn in such a disappointing performance against Adelaide on the eve of the finals and blow a top two spot?

Mcindoe: One of the most disappointing performances in the club’s history. Only passion shown was in the tunnel during the scuffle. The game started with a cautious optimism which was quickly replaced with the all too common feeling of disappointment. After the game the disappointment was still there and the frustration of having JVS still making everyone believe with his trademark mini runs of form that he’s the man for the job.

5.1 How disappointing was it not to win the right to a home final and turn in arguably the poor displays of the season last week?

Doherty: Before the game everyone was absolutely buzzing. We all began to feel deflated the longer the game went on. At half-time we thought Kenny would sort them out and we would have a great come from behind victory but instead conceded two more goals to 10 men. To miss was bitterly disappointing. It’s okay though, we know we’ll bounce back and lift the toilet seat on the first day of May.

  1. Who will be more important to getting the win in your opinion?

Mcindoe: Mooy. He is the reason Bruno has scored so many goals and will be the decisive factor. If he is allowed space and time on the all he could rip Glory apart.

Doherty: Castro. Class above the rest of the league. He holds the ball up and allows us to get organised and his finishing and passing is world-class. We all saw how terrible we were without the little El Maestro last week. He will make City look like twats!

  1. Prediction, thoughts leading into the match?

Mcindoe: We’ll win 2-1. Glory to score early and City to score on a breakaway just before half-time. Second half will be tight, but some Mooy magic will separate the two sides. Must be defensively tight, otherwise Glory can do damage. We do that and we will earn a victory.

Doherty: 2-1 win to the Glory. Andy Keogh with the opener from a Castro asssist and a late Marinkovic thunderbolt to seal the deal.

  1. One word answer when you hear the name:

Mcindoe:

Lowe – Sour

Keogh – Salary-cap

Castro – Freak

Lowry – Grub

Garcia – Useless

Doherty:

Van’t Schip – Dutch

Mooy – Class

Fornaroli – Dangerous

Kisnorbo – Who?

Novillo – Thug
