Melbourne City’s W-League star Jess Fishlock says the club is becoming a leading player in the women’s game in Australia and around the globe.

The Welsh midfielder says very few clubs around the world can match what City has to offer for women’s football.

The 29-year-old boasts a wealth of experience in women’s football, having plied her trade for AZ Alkmaar, Melbourne Victory, Seattle and now Melbourne City, among others.

“From the City perspective, I’ve been shrewdly impressed with everything that they have, and everything that they are working toward in regards to the women’s game,” Fishlock said.

“What Melbourne City women have here, only very few clubs in the world have this facility and have this backing and have everything that we have.

“The facility and the structure and everything they are doing for women’s football … there’s only very few clubs in the world that have that structure, and that is a huge thing to have in Australia because no one has ever had that before.”

Fishlock lauded the standards set for women’s football set by City and warned other clubs that it is now up to them to follow the example set by City, or risk being left behind.

“They’re setting standards, huge standards, and it’s very exciting times for the W-League here because next year, clubs have a choice to make.

“They either catch up and try to match and invest (City’s efforts), or they don’t … that’s not very helpful for the league.

“What Melbourne City have done here, and the City Group, could be the changing force in Australian women’s football. Like I said, I’m extremely thankful to be a part of that.”

City Women flew through the W-League home and away season and were streets ahead of the chasing pack, winning all 12 matches on offer and clinching the premiership with two games in hand.

They take on Brisbane Roar at AAMI Park ahead of City’s A-League clash with Wellington Phoenix on Monday night.
