Argentine striker Mauro Icardi has revealed he was never going to leave Inter Milan, despite being linked with a move away during the summer.

Icardi, 23, was heavily rumoured set to join Spanish side Atletico Madrid, with his agent Wanda Nara alleging his client was the source of negotiations between the two clubs.

However, on the subject of his future, Argentine has made his intentions clear.

“I want to win with this shirt. I want to stay here. I am comfortable in the city and I never thought about leaving this team,” Icardi told Mediaset.

The 23-year-old was full of praise for his club’s strong transfer window, believing it would only help him develop as a player.

“The club invested heavily in the summer, bringing in quality players and this is an advantage for me.”

Following his goal in the weekend’s win against Juventus his wife Nara, claimed on Twitter he was the “best number nine in the world”.

Despite the claims Icardi admitted he still has a long way to go.

“She wrote that because she’s my wife, but I’m lacking a lot to be considered the best striker in the world. There are many better strikers who do amazing things,” he added.

“It’s my duty and I have to keep doing it, and of course to do it against Juve is always nice. Doing it in the Inter shirt is different than doing it for Samp [Sampdoria].

“Scoring in the Derby d’Italia is always important and a source of great satisfaction.”
