The Greece international joins the newly promoted side on a season-long loan deal.

RB Leipzig have signed centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos on loan from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Greek defender will add undoubted quality and experience to Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side, having plied his trade in the Bundesliga since 2010 when he signed for Schalke from Olympiacos.

24-year-old Papadopoulos has made 91 top flight appearances in Germany, with 61 of those coming for the Royal Blues and 30 for current club Bayer Leverkusen, netting five times in the process.

The former Schalke man has also turned out 20 times for his country, scoring on his debut in a 3-1 win against Malta in June 2011.

The tough-tackling centre-back has seen his development plateau in recent years, however, due to a raft of long-term injury issues.

Papdopoulos still appears to be rated highly, though, with RB Leipzig sporting director Ralf Ragnick extremely enthused to be bringing in a player of such high calibre.

“He’s a good winner of the ball, brings a good level of aggression and is also a good communicator,” Ragnick said.

Following on from a late 2-2 draw against Hoffenheim over the weekend, the newly promoted side will face last season’s runners-up Borussia Dortmund after the international break.
