Malaga’s poor start to the season continues as Villarreal travelled to La Rosaleda and took the three points thanks to a Fernando Tissone own goal.
This was Malaga’s fifth game in a row without scoring a goal and their woes have left them in the relegation zone. Villarreal, meanwhile, continue their unbeaten start to the season and will finish matchday five as joint leaders.
A tight first half saw little goalmouth action. Malaga dominated possession but only threatened Alphonse Areola’s goal once when Juanpi was left unmarked at the far post only to put the ball wide. Villarreal looked to hit on the counter-attack and, were it not for two superb saves by Carlos Kameni from Nahuel and Leo Baptistao, would have led the match.
The second half started as the first finished with neither side able to really put their stamp on the match. That all changed on 70 minutes when a Denis Suarez free kick was turned into his own net by Tissone.
Malaga stormed forward following the goal and, despite having their best period, could not break their duck. A combination of poor finishing, blocked shots and smart stops by Areola left Los Boquerones scoreless as El Submarino Amarillo took the points.
