The league leaders travelled to the home of last place but the game did not go to script as Levante secured the three points with a 1-0 win.

The game was played mostly in the middle as both sides struggled for quality in the final third.

The first half brought little in the way of goal mouth action but provided the game’s biggest talking point. Bojan Jokic saw two yellow cards, both for extremely poor challenges and was given his marching orders on 36 minutes.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first. Very little goal mouth action from either team but while Villarreal held more of the ball Levante looked the more threatening.

It took until the 82nd minute for the deadlock to be broken. A driving run into the Villarreal half by Jose Morales released Nabil Ghilas down the left-side who delivered a cross that was dutifully dispatched by Deyverson with a volley around the body of Victor Ruiz.

Ghilas should have made it 2-0 in the final moment as Villarreal pushed everyone forward but was unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
