Melbourne Victory boss Kevin Muscat says the club will not place Carl Valeri on the long-term injury list or sign an injury replacement after the captain was diagnosed with an inflammatory condition and ruled out indefinitely.

The illness is said to be affecting Valeri’s brain, with repercussions for his balance.

Despite the diagnosis, Muscat said Valeri was in high spirits and his condition has improved somewhat. He added that Valeri has resumed some training, but is yet to commence ball work.

“He’s (Valeri) making progress,” Muscat said.

“He came in yesterday and was in good spirits.

“He’s able to do as much as he can handle at the moment. He’ll come in and do stuff on the bike … whatever he’s able to complete, he’ll do.

“He’s able to walk, he drove in yesterday. He’s in the best possible care.”

Muscat gave Valeri every chance of returning to the field at some stage this season, refusing to rule him out for the remainder of the campaign.

“Yes (I think he will) … we want Carl’s health back to normal, so I’m optimistic that he will.

“When he’s able to get back out, time will tell.”

Victory club doctor Krishant Naidu said Valeri has had tests on the matter, though the results of those tests will not be known for at least another fortnight.

“He has had specialist reviews with an ear, nose and throat surgeon and a neurologist with extensive investigations,” Dr Naidu said in a statement.

“The complete results of these tests will not be known for a at least a further two weeks.”
