Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has responded to striker Daniel Sturridge’s criticism of him, rubbishing suggestions the player is dissatisfied with his current role.

Sturridge was deployed on the wing rather than his preferred central striker role against Burnley on the weekend, and in wake of the defeat, the England international took a swipe at his boss.

The attacker came off the bench in the Reds’ 5-0 win at Burton Albion in the League Cup, utilised in a role similar to that at Turf Moor.

But the manager was quick to quash any discontent, assuring Sturridge his preference wasn’t to play him out wide.

“I don’t want to play Daniel as a wide player but he can play there,” Klopp was quoted as saying in the Daily Mail.

“Burnley and Burton weren’t games where I needed an offensive winger.

“It wasn’t a fixed position for him. There is absolutely no problem.

“It’s flexible football. It’s about getting in and around the box.

“Daniel is a very smart player. He’s good at getting himself into positions where it’s not easy to defend.”

Liverpool’s next Premier League match is an away date with Tottenham Hotspur.
