Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata believes his are much more of a threat from set-pieces this season than the team were under the reign of former boss Louis van Gaal.

United managed three goals from corners in the first half against Leicester City this weekend, as they romped to a 4-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Following the result, the Spaniard says the team now possesses much more quality in the box on set-pieces, making them a handful for opposition defences.

“As a team we try to get the ball into the box for someone to put it in the back of the net. We tried it a few times last season but it didn’t work. Now we know we have strong people, tall people to head the ball in,” Mata told MUTV as reported by Sky Sports.

“We as takers, we just try to put it in the box the best way we can, aiming for someone to put it in the back of the net.

Marcus Rashford’s goal, assisted by Mata, came as a result of great awareness from United to pick apart the unsuspecting Foxes defenders.

“Today we showed that we are very strong on that and as well a nice goal between Daley, me and Marcus. We tried [it] a few times last season and it never worked but today finally it worked.”

United will now turn their attentions to a home clash with Ukrainian side FC Zorya in the Europa League before hosting Stoke City next weekend.
