Aston Villa defender Joleon Lescott has completed his move to Greece, joining AEK Athens, the club has confirmed.

The 34-year-old has joined his new club on a two-year deal, with a transfer fee not included in the announcement, but it is rumoured the deal will cost the Greek club zero.

With only a year to run on his Villans contract, the former Manchester City man elected to move away from Villa Park.

Lescott had fallen down the pecking order under new manager Robert Di Matteo in the early part of the season.

The defender had already rejected a move to Scottish giants Rangers earlier this summer due to family reasons and was reported to have gathered interest from clubs in Italy also.

Lescott drew heavy criticism from Aston Villa fans during a difficult campaign last season.

Lescott uploaded a picture of himself with a Mercedes following his side’s 6-0 loss to Liverpool before saying at the end of the season that relegation was a “weight off his shoulders”.

Aston Villa’s defensive stocks have taken a hit in the past few days with two other players making moves away from the club. Joe Bennett has joined Cardiff City while Jores Okore made the switch to FC Copenhagen.
