Melbourne City manager John van’t Schip has confirmed his club are closing in on their final marquee signing as A-League clubs scramble to finalise their squads ahead of the new season.

Van’t Schip confirmed the club were close to signing the versatile Nico Colazo from Argentinian giants Boca Juniors, with only the final details of the deal left to complete.

Colazo trained with his soon-to-be team mates at AAMI Park this morning.

“We have a player that is almost in, we just have to wait for some paperwork and then that’s the final spot,” the former Dutch international told reporters.

The City manager said he expects the 26-year-old to add quality to his team’s lineup.

“He’s a good player. He played on a high level in Argentina at Boca.

“[He] had some issues and therefore didn’t play too much last period and has the opportunity and liked the opportunity to join us in this project.

“He is a player who can play up front, midfield and even in defence so it’s a versatile player.

“And has good qualities, technically, strong and (a) good left foot.

With the season only weeks away, van’t Schip says he remains unsure whether Colazo would be fit in time for the club’s season opener.

“That’s something we have to have a bit of a better look at, it’s a player that has been training the whole few last months with Boca and played some internal games,” he added.

“So he is in a good physical state but if it’s in good physical game state it’s something we have to find out.”
