Joel Matip has revealed he is excited to hear the famous ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ ring out at Anfield for the first time as a Red.
Liverpool’s opening three fixtures were away due to schedule changes for the new stadium, but this weekend Matip will finally mark his Anfield debut against Leicester City. The 25-year-old was impressive during his first appearance for the Merseysiders in a 1-1 away draw against Tottenham.
“I think Liverpool is famous for its stadium, for its atmosphere. It will be a great atmosphere and I’ll be happy when I can play there,” the Cameroon international told Liverpool’s website.
“To hear ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ for the first time at the stadium will be a special moment and I will enjoy it.”
The defender made 194 Bundesliga appearances for Schalke 04, scoring an impressive 17 goals for a centre-back. Last season he averaged 5.4 clearances and three interceptions each game.
The towering Cameroonian will be eager to make an immediate impact at Anfield, with the Reds having conceded six goals in three matches.
