The Hammers will have been yearning for a victorious maiden turn in their new home, and not just for sentimental reasons. Having slumped to a limp 2-1 defeat to NK Domžale in Slovenia, Slaven Bilic’s team needed to take full command of the return fixture if they were to ensure there would be more European nights gracing the Olympic Stadium this season.

So, in a leaning wading pool of a ground, still shuffling awkwardly around the task of holding football matches, West Ham did just that. The curtain-raising moment of ‘Bubbles’ being bellowed around the stands – some of them fairly makeshift – lifted the spirits of old, and at least partly quelled fears of a library-esque atmosphere. Cheikhou Kouyate scored twice, and new signing Sofiane Feghouli applied the final lustrous veneer with a super strike, as West Ham triumphed 3-0 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate.

Having crashed out at this stage last season, West Ham have already bettered that effort, but will be set on seizing a place in the tournament proper. Even the relatively modest prestige of a Europa League place can only assist in growing the reputation of a club with lofty ambitions, not to mention send out an attractive aroma to lure in that new striker Bilic demands.

Here’s how Twitter reacted.
