Portugal have booked a place in the semi-finals of the European Championship yet again, following a nervy victory on penalties after the game finished 1-1.

Poland made a flying start and took the lead inside two minutes through Robert Lewandowski’s clinical strike from eight yards.

On 33 minutes Renato Sanches levelled the match with a superb curling effort from 20 yards, after clever interplay with Nani.

In a tense second half, both teams traded blows and the ascendancy but neither could find a decisive route to goal and extra time was needed to separate the two sides.

Lewandowski played an enticing cross into the area, but wasn’t rewarded with enough urgency from his on-rushing teammates, while Nani shot a powerful shot straight at a relieved Lukasz Fabianski.

That was as close as either side would get to breaking the deadlock, with penalties deciding the outcome of a cagey affair.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

After a series of inch-perfect penalties one of the tournament’s best players, Jakub Blaszcyzkowski, was denied by an outstanding from Rui Patricio.

Ricardo Quaresma was given the chance to send Portugal through to the semi-finals and he did so with clinical spot kick to set up a semi-final clash with Belgium or Wales.
