The first half was an end-to-end affair, with Liverpool creating the bulk of the chances. However, on 33 minutes Simon Mignolet violated the six-second rule and much to Anfield’s surprise the referee blew for an in-direct free-kick.

From the resulting set-piece Bordeaux’s Henri Saivet curled in a superb curling effort to stun the home side.

Their lead lasted for just four minutes when Liverpool levelled through a penalty from James Milner, following a foul on Christian Benteke.

The Belgian striker then put the Reds in front moments before half-time with a fiercely struck drive.

A controversial disallowed goal from Benteke was the only real highlight of the second half, as the Reds sealed their passage through to the knockout stages.
