Iceland recored the most remarkable victory, after coming back from one goal down to defeat England 2-1 in a pulsating encounter.
England got off to a flying start when Daniel Sturridge’s floated cross played in Raheem Sterling, who was chopped down in the box by goalkeeper Hannes Thór Halldórsson.
Wayne Rooney took responsibility and calmly slotted the ball with a low-footed drive to give England the ascendancy.
However, their lead would last barely a minute when Ragnar Sigurdsson latched onto a looping header from Kári Arnason to shock England level the match.
Shock then turned to belief on 18 minutes after Kolbeinn Sigthorsson struck a shot which crept past the outstretched arm of Joe Hart and over the line, with the England goalkeeper again culpable for some weak shot-stopping.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
England failed to create any clear-cut goalscoring opportunities in the second half, as Iceland’s discipline and defensive pressure came to the fore.
What an incredible result for the minnows and arguably England’s most embarrassing defeat of their history.

You can tell #ENG preparation for this was all about France in the quarter-final. We weren’t mentally in the game at any point.

Pathetic display put on by #ENG led by Hodgson. Subs, Rooney participation and Kane free kicks all part of it. Credit to #ISL #EURO2016

Wasted talent, bizarre tactics, poor substitutions on the whole, shoehorning players into positions. Hodgson has to go. #ENG
