Western Sydney Wanderers have continued their excellent form, defeating Newcastle Jets 2-0 at Parramatta in the A-League’s first ever Christmas Eve fixture.
A controversial handball miss by the officials just before the Wanderers scored was a hot topic, so too Mark Birighitti’s uncharacteristic error that gifted Alberto the opening goal.
Mark Bridge’s superb solo effort won plenty of plaudits while David Carney faced a degree of ridicule for a full moon. Strikers Federico Piovaccari and Milos Trifunovic were the fans’ choice of Christmas turkey after a series of glaring missed opportunities; two excellent chances for either striker were squandered in the opening half.
Opinions on Christmas Eve football seemed split down the middle, with some fans approving with others rejecting the idea.

Are we really paying Trifunovic? Are you sure? Who made that decision? Was anything other than YouTube used to scout him? #WSWvNEW

The verdict is in. Any sport on Xmas Eve, or Xmas Day is a big no no. Don’t try this again next year. #WSWvNEW https://t.co/EFOGd9B2Z8
