Adelaide United secured their first A-League Championship with a 3-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers at the Adelaide Oval.

Bruce Kamau, the youngest player on the pitch, opened the scoring with a predatory finish in the 22nd minute after Marcelo Carrusca swung in a dangerous ball from the left flank.

The Reds were able to double their lead before the break, with Kamau winning a free-kick on the edge of the box after being brought down by Nikolai Topor-Stanley. Isaias delivered the free-kick of his life, expertly guiding the ball over the wall and into the top corner to send the large Adelaide contingent of fans into raptures.

The Wanderers refused to go down without a fight and pulled one back from right back Scott Neville, who produced a brilliant finish with the outside of his foot. Tony Popovic’s side were relentless in their pressure on Adelaide’s goal, but the Reds’ reputation as the best defence proved true, holding back their opposition long enough for Pablo Sanchez to secure the win with a goal in the 90th minute. The Wanderers will have to wait at least another year to end their grand final drought.
