AC Milan secured a hard-fought 0-0 draw against a free-flowing Fiorentina side at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in matchday six of Serie A.

In a match with few highlights, the Viola would go on to rue Josip Illicic’s first-half squandered penalty, after Paulo Sousa’s men controlled proceedings for the majority of the clash.

Milan were resolute in defence with the San Siro club registering its third successive clean sheet.

The match began at a frenetic tempo with both sides committing men forward on attacks.

Although, the home side gradually exerted its influence on proceedings by dominating possession and attempting to breach Gianluigi Donnarumma from distance.

Milan youngster Davide Calabria gave away a penalty for holding Borja Valero in the box, Josip Illicic would miss the ensuing penalty, striking the post.

It appeared a case of justice served after the somewhat harsh decision by referee Daniele Orsato.

However, it did not deter Fiorentina who continued to pressurise the Rossoneri rear guard, though the inexperienced back four managed to keep the hosts scoreless heading into the half-time break.

After the restart, the visitors made a couple of forays into the Fiorentina box, but failed to create any clear-cut chances during a dominant 15-minute period.

Suso saw his goal-bound shot expertly blocked by the Viola defence virtually on the line after it beat the outstretched Ciprian Tatarusanu.

Milan had a great chance to steal all three points, but Luiz Adriano was controversially brought down outside the area just before pulling the trigger as he was one-on-one with the keeper.

The result means Fiorentina and Milan lie in 12th and sixth respectively on the league table.
