The A-League’s most experienced referee Ben Williams has hung up the whistle and announced his retirement.

Williams, 39, will finish his officiating duties on Tuesday night when he referees the International Champions Cup match between Juventus and Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night at the MCG.

However, he will still be available to referee international matches until December.

The A-League veteran ends his tenure with the A-League after 161 matches and 24 NSL matches.

“After 22 years on the national panel and 12 years as a FIFA referee it feels like the right time to hang up the whistle,” Williams said.

“I’m looking forward to spending time with my family and giving them all the love and support they afforded me throughout my career.

FFA CEO David Gallop reserved special praise for Williams, who was an important cog in trying to improve the officiating in the A-League.

“I’d to congratulate Ben Williams on his career and his role in the evolution of referees in the A-League,” Gallop said.

“Ben was an important part of the transition into full-time professional referees and we wish him well in his future endeavours and family life.”
