Adebayo Akinfenwa, better known as “The Beast,” has confirmed he is considering the prospect of Australia and the A-League in his next move at club football.

The English football cult hero was released by AFC Wimbledon following his starring role in the League Two playoff final a fortnight ago, where Wimbledon gained promotion to League One with a 2-0 win against Plymouth Argyle.

Akinfenwa scored a decisive penalty in that match and was the star of the show in a viral post-match interview, where the 34-year-old with a 103kg frame made a job application to interested managers.

As of today, Akinfenwa is on holiday in Portugal and the US with his family and will return to the UK next week to begin discussions with interested clubs, one of which is an unnamed Australian club.

“I did get a call from my agent (World in Motion Group) saying there’s an Australian club interested,” he told Outside90.com

“They wanted to sit down with me tomorrow (Friday) but I’m not going to be in the country. My agent knows how important time away is for me, he’s not rushing it.

“100 per-cent I’d consider it. I know Australia’s far and I’ll have to sit down with my family and weigh up everything, but I would 100 per-cent consider it.

“If anybody knows me I never say never, so when I get back I’ll sit down if the club is still interested.”

The striker said he was even more intrigued by Australia after he learned that there is a cult following Down Under for “The Beast,” a fan favourite among Aussies particularly on the FIFA video game.

“To have a massive following in Australia is mind-boggling for me. It blows my mind,” he said.

“For you to say I’ve got a following [in Australia] it intrigues me even more in going out there.

“I do hear Australia is very nice, stress-free and very relaxing. It’d be totally different coming from Hackney and the craziness of London.”

Akinfenwa is also expected to attract the interest of other lower-tier mid-table clubs and says he still believes he has two years of good football left in him.

“I know I’ve still got the hunger to play, that burning desire to get on that pitch,” he said.

“I’m trying to get Roy to hit me up on WhatsApp but I need to wait and see how England do in the Euros.”
