Southampton secured maximum points at home last night with Virgil van Dijk, Dušan Tadić and Sadio Mane all scoring in a straightforward 3-1 victory over Swansea City.

The Saints enthused the home crowd at St Mary’s Stadium with a thrilling display, leaving the visitors reeling on the pitch. From the start of the match, Southampton’s desire was obvious and soon resulted in a goal, van Dijk nodding in a header after James Ward-Prowse’s corner kick. Jack Cork was slightly late in marking, leaving space for the Dutchman to score the first of the match.

Garry Monk’s players were unable to create a proper chance during the 90 minutes, making the surprise 4-4-2 setup not worthwhile. Andre Ayew and Bafetimbi Gomis were operating as strikers, but Jose Fonte and van Dijk barely even had any problems. A double substitution at halftime from Monk was not enough, as Tadić and Mane added further goals in a seven-minute span. Gylfi Sigurdsson’s first of the season from the penalty spot seven minutes before stoppage time was not enough to make an impact on the final result.
