Newcastle run out 2-1 victors over West Ham at home.
With new boy Jonjo Shelvey inserted into the starting line up instantly, and having generated no small amount of confidence from that cracking comeback against Manchester Unite last round, St James Park was rocking from the start here. There was a clear, sharp feeling here; hope is growing, despite the bottom-three position, and as the warmth rises in the collective stomach on Tyneside, the team is responding.

They harried West Ham into submission, scoring two goals quickly, and holding out despite threatening to ruin their own occasion with a horrible error. Shelvey enjoyed a stellar debut, passing crisply and with impressive ambition. West Ham made a game of it, by then end, after Nikica Jelavic profited from a terrible Mbemba back-pass, but Newcastle held firm, ending a five-match winless run.
