Southampton deepened Tottenham Hotpsur’s misery as they claimed a 2-1 win at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.

Steven Davis doubled his season’s goal tally with both goals to rub salt into Spurs’ wounds. On a more positive note for Tottenham, they  broke their record goalscoring tally as they scored 68 goals in one season, more than they have ever scored in the Premier League.

Son Hueng-min took advantage of a slow Fraser Forster, going around the goalkeeper before slotting the ball into the net in the 16th minute. Forster was sluggish off his line and did not get there in time to deny Son’s chance.

Davis then drew the Saints level after Hugo Lloris failed to get a strong enough hand to keep out the effort.
The former Glasgow Ranger doubled his money in the second half, taking on several Tottenham defenders before finally striking on the edge of the box to put the visitors in front in the 72nd minute.

Tottenham still lie second, and Manchester City and Arsenal’s draw keeps them in with a chance of finishing as runners-up. Southampton are in sixth with Europa League football their target.

Tottenham Hotspur

Hugo Lloris – 6: Could have done more to keep out Davis’ first goal.

Kyle Walker – 6.5: Took a knock in the first half after going up for a challenge in the air.

Toby Alderweireld – 6.5: Could have been closer to Davis to stop him from scoring the leveller. Spurs’ defence was not its usual self, especially as Davis danced around them on the edge of the box to score his second goal.

Jan Vertonghen – 7: Had a header cleared off the Saints’ line. Took a hit from Lloris which was a somewhat worrying case of friendly fire.

Danny Rose – 7: Managed to inflict a head injury upon Oriol Romeu that was accidental, though maybe he should not have had his arms so high.

Eric Dier – 7: Made a important challenge on Victor Wanyama to stop the Kenyan from closing in on goal.

Ryan Mason – 6.5: Has big boots to fill with Mousa Dembele suspended, but did relatively well in the Belgian’s absence.

Christian Eriksen – 7: Involved in the play and was able to fire a few shots, including one that drew a smart save from Forster.

Erik Lamela – 6.5: Found himself in scoring positions on a few occasions but the final product was often lacking and service to the Argentine was poor.

Son Hueng-min – 7.5: Put the home side in front with a classy goal. Worked hard to manoeuvre his way around the Saints defence to take the goal himself.

Harry Kane – 7: Had a selfish moment where he should have passed the ball, but instead took a shot which was easily smothered by Forster. Virgil van Djik played very well to keep Kane at bay.

Substitutions

Clinton N’Jie – 6.5: Battled well in the box for the final 15 minutes or so.

Nacer Chadli – 7: Could have had a late equaliser, but his efforts were dispelled.
