Tottenham Hotspur were left red-faced and frustrated as Newcastle completed a shock 1-2 win in the dying minutes at White Hart Lane, ending Spur’s 14 match unbeaten run, and leaping out of the bottom three on Sunday.

Aleksander Mitrovic came on late in the second half to bring Newcastle level with a goal bundled in, as well as aiding Ayoze Perez in scoring the winner which was squeezed under Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in injury time.

Tottenham went into the break with a 1-0 lead through Eric Dier. The Englishman headed across goalkeeper Rob Elliot, who got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out. The first half had originally failed to really ignite until the 39th minute, but the majority of the game was controlled by the home side. Newcastle had an early, dangerous chance through De Jong, but his shot was unfortunately blocked by his own player, Cisse.

Previously, Erik Lamela had challenged Elliot, who produced two outstanding saves to keep Spurs at bay until the end of the half.

The second half was more promising for Newcastle, as they enjoyed spells of possession and chances towards goal.
Son Hueng-min had an opportunity in space to give Spurs safety, but his shot was fired over the bar.

The dying moments and injury time proved fatal for Tottenham, who had 20 shots all game compared to Newcastle’s eight.
Spurs missed out on nudging their way into the top four.
