Chelsea ended up as winners due to a goal from Diego Costa and an own goal by Alan Hutton. The majority of fans left Stamford Bridge the happiest they’ve been in weeks.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa supporters will be again disappointed to have lost because their team put in a fairly good performance against the reigning champions. Even though Chelsea were leading for the majority of the match, it would be difficult to argue that they dominated completely.

A big mistake by Brad Guzan led directly to Chelsea regaining possession high up the field, and within a few seconds Villa conceded. Although Joleon Lescott may have not controlled the ball properly, it was silly for Guzan to pass short with Chelsea’s attackers pushing up the field, piling on pressure. Willian squared the ball to Diego Costa for a simple finish.

Just after half time an unlucky own goal was scored by Alan Hutton. Diego Costa did well to make space for a shot but the finish was poor. However, the ball still ended up in the back of the net as it came off the Villa defender. Hutton could not be blamed, nor should Guzan. It was a great block from him and didn’t look like the American goalkeeper could have saved it.
