New Flamengo signing Paolo Guerrero’s impressive hat-trick was enough to see Peru overcome Bolivia in a 3-1 victory at the Estadio Municipal Germán Becker in Temuco.

La Blanquirroja’s comfortable win sees them meet in-form hosts Chile in the first Semi-Final of the Copa América on June 29. Two goals from former Corinthians striker Guerrero in the space of three first-half minutes set Ricardo Gareca’s men on their way, before the powerful striker completed his hat-trick on 74 minutes to seal Peru’s semi-final berth.

Bolivia netted a consolation six minutes from time through Marcelo Martins Moreno’s penalty, but it was not enough to see two-time champions Peru from reaching the semi-finals finals for the second successive tournament.

The game began as many expected, with Peru looking vastly superior to the Bolivians. Peru finished third in the previous Copa América in Argentina in 2011, while Bolivia had not made a quarter-final appearance since hosting the  competition in 1997.

La Blanquirroja took a deserved lead 20 minutes in, when Guerrero’s deflected header found the net, before the Flamengo striker doubled Peru’s advantage only three minutes later after calmly finishing off a counter-attacking move which caught out Bolivia. La Valverde looked to claw their way back into the contest, but were unable to reduce the deficit before the break, while Jefferson Farfán should have put the contest to bed after hitting the from of the goal twice.

The second 45 began in similar fashion to the first, as Peru searched for the goal that would effectively end the contest. However, Gareca’s men would eventually find the decisive third only minutes after Bolivia felt they should have had a penalty. Guerrero completed his three goal haul on 73 minutes after capitalising on a dreadful back pass, recording his second hat-trick in consecutive tournaments. Bolivia netted a consolation goal six minutes from time when Martins Moreno converted a penalty for La Valverde, but it did little to dampen the spirits of Peru, who ran out deserved 3-1 winners.
